Because First Friday falls on Easter weekend, our First Friday program in April will be on the Second Friday, April 9^th. Our April program is sponsored by Friends of Florida Caverns State Park. As usual, it will be at the Agriculture Conference Center on Pennsylvania Avenue in Marianna. Breakfast and networking begin at 7:00am, with the program starting at 7:45am.

 

Our featured speaker is Dr. Nancy White, professor of anthropology at the University of South Florida. Dr. White is a well known and respected regional authority on Native Americans in the Apalachicola River Basin. In her message, she will bring alive the history and stories of Native American people in this region, their artifacts, and the role they played in shaping the territory.

 

Dr. White is an archaeologist who has specialized in the prehistoric and early historic cultures of northwest Florida for many years. She and her students have conducted archaeological surveys along the Chipola and Apalachicola Rivers and around Lake Seminole.

 

She has written several books in her area of expertise, including Gulf Coast Archaeology, the Southeastern United States and Mexico, and articles about specific projects in The Florida Anthropologist. Her popular works include Archaeology for Dummies and a booklet entitled Apalachicola Valley Archaeology.
